A Collaborative Design Studio: Architecture and Prototype

In this paper we discuss theDrexel Collaborative Design Studio (DCDS), an environment for distributed engineering under development at the Geometric and Intelligent Computing Laboratory at Drexel University. DCDS is intended to enhance collaborative design work, focusing in particular on design of electro-mechanical artifacts. Our goal is to provide transparent collaborative work and archival services to document the design process. The DCDS environment consists of IP-based communication and collaborative work tools, a design knowledge repository, and a design-speci c message model for capturing communication during the design process. This research seeks to enhance our understanding of how to make designers more e ective in networked engineering environments. The new design process consists of teams of decentralized designers, collaborating over networks using communication and engineering software tools. This convergence of the network with engineering practice creates new research challenges:
